Holy Basil (Ocimum tenuiflorum) is a perennial flowering plant from the mint family called Lamiaceae that is native to India and is commonly used in the traditional Indian medicine system — Ayurveda. Considered as sacred in the Hindu faith, most traditional homes and temples in India have at least one holy basil, or tulsi plant, which is used in prayers to insure personal health, spiritual purity, and family well-being. 
 
The Holy Basil leaf, an oval-shaped leaf with a slightly sharp tip used to make tulsi tea, which is where the majority of the plant’s healing compounds are found. Extracts, oils and supplements can also be made from Holy Basil seeds, leaves, flowers and stems. In Ayurvedic medicine, Holy Basil is used to strengthen the respiratory system, and for coughs and colds, especially when associated with asthma and bronchitis. Holy Basil is also used to promote circulation, normalizes blood pressure, bring down fevers, and support the digestive system.
